What to wear for your brand photos: a Dos & dont’s guide
When it comes to brand photos, what you wear really matters.
Your outfit isn’t just about looking good; it’s about making sure your personality and brand identity come through. You want to feel comfortable, confident, and true to yourself.
But some outfit choices can actually work against you. That’s why I’m here to share some tips on what to wear (and what to avoid) to make sure you look your best.
Let’s start with the DON’TS…
Common DON'Ts, AKA What NOT to Wear in Brand Photos:
Horizontal Stripes
Why: They can create a widening effect and are often unflattering on camera. Stripes can also cause an effect in the camera where the pattern appears distorted or wavy. In the end, it’s almost never going to photograph well
Tip: Opt for vertical stripes (I usually suggest no stripes if you can!) or solid colors
Neon or Bright Colors (unless on-brand):
Why: Neon colors can create an unwanted color cast on your skin and other nearby surfaces and tend to draw attention away from your face. Of course, as I stated above, if neon is very much on brand, we make it work and own it! But, if it isn’t on brand, it’s generally not my go to suggestion
Tip: Choose muted tones or rich, jewel colors that complement your brand and your skin tones without being overpowering
Busy Patterns or Tiny Prints:
Why: Small, intricate patterns (like tiny polka dots or tight plaid) can create a distracting visual effect in images. Again, if there is something VERY much on brand you want to use, we can make it work! But, if you can avoid it, it’s better
Tip: Stick to simple patterns or larger, subtle prints that won’t clash with your brand aesthetic and will still be timeless and classic enough to not date your photos with a certain type of trend (looking at you, chevron!)
Logos or Branded Graphics (Unless It's Your Brand):
Why: Wearing another brand’s logo can dilute your brand message and look unprofessional. Try to wear clothing that has no logos or marks or large graphics or text, again, unless it’s of YOUR business name or brand or makes perfect sense for your brand!
Tip: Opt for solid pieces or apparel with your own logo if it’s part of your branding
Shiny, Reflective Fabrics:
Why: These can catch the light and create unflattering reflections in photos
Tip: Choose matte fabrics or natural textures like cotton, linen, or wool
Overly Trendy Pieces:
Why: Fashion trends can make your photos look dated quickly. Again, do I need to bring up our old friend, chevron print?! Try to avoid anything overly trendy, so that your photos can be classic and timeless and aren’t dated in the next year. Sure, you might get brand photos updated every year or even every few years (which I suggest since we all change!) but you still want some images that don’t date that you can use for many years to come if you want!
Tip: Go for classic, timeless pieces that won’t look outdated next season and skip and avoid anything overly trendy
Wrinkled or Ill-Fitting Clothes:
Why: Even the best outfit can look sloppy if it’s not tailored or ironed. Always, always try items on before shoot day. Overly fitted and you’ll be uncomfortable or fabric will be clinging to every part of you that you don’t want to show, too lose and it may make you feel like you look baggy or sloppy
Tip: Make sure your clothes are well-fitted and pressed. Bring a small steamer or wrinkle release spray to your shoot.
Excessive Accessories:
Why: Too many accessories can look cluttered and distracting
Tip: Choose one statement piece or simple, coordinating jewelry to keep the focus on your face. Something on brand?! Go for it! Simple day to day pieces you always use? Perfect!
White on White (If Your Background Is Light):
Why: White outfits on a white background can make you blend in and lose definition. Same goes for black! If your entire outfit is ALL BLACK and you have no skin exposed, even on a lighter backdrop, you can end up looking like a floating head atop a black blur. This doesn’t mean I don’t LOVE a good monochromatic image, but it has to be thoughtfully and intentionally planned out.
Tip: Add a pop of color or a layered piece to break up the look and make sure we discuss what backgrounds will be used during the planning process so we are on the same page!
Okay now, even though I showed you what to do instead and gave some tips above, let’s also make a list of WHAT TO DO and focus on as well…
NOW WHAT TO DO, AKA What to Wear in Brand Photos:
Solid Colors:
Why: Solid colors are timeless and keep the focus on your face rather than your outfit. They also photograph well and don’t create distractions
Tip: Choose colors that align with your brand palette and complement your skin tone
Layers and Textures:
Why: Adding layers like jackets, cardigans, or scarves can give your outfit depth and make your photos visually interesting, HOWEVER, be careful not to make your photos too seasonal feeling unless you plan to do multiple sessions!
Tip: Opt for natural fabrics like cotton, wool, or linen, as they add subtle texture without looking too busy
Well Fitting Clothing:
Why: Properly fitting clothes look more polished and help you feel confident during your session
Tip: Try on your outfits ahead of time to ensure they fit comfortably and flatter your shape
Simple Patterns:
Why: Subtle patterns, like thin stripes or small checks, can add interest without being overwhelming
Tip: Stick to classic patterns that won’t go out of style or clash with your surroundings
Brand-Aligned Accessories:
Why: Accessories can add personality and tie your outfit to your brand identity
Tip: Keep it simple by choosing one statement piece or coordinating jewelry
Layered Jewelry:
Why: Delicate, layered pieces can add dimension without feeling too heavy or cluttered
Tip: Choose a few coordinating pieces that complement your outfit
Outfits That Reflect Your Brand Personality:
Why: Wearing clothes that feel authentic helps you feel more confident and natural in your photos
Tip: Think about how you want your audience to perceive you and dress accordingly
