What to wear to your brand photoshoot

When it comes to brand photos, what you wear really matters. Your outfit isn’t just about looking good; it’s about making sure your personality and brand identity come through.

You want to feel comfortable, confident, and true to yourself. But some outfit choices can actually work against you, making your photos feel less authentic or professional. That’s why I’m here to share some tips on what to wear (and what to avoid) to make sure you look your best and let your brand shine through.

Color Choices:

Choosing the right colors for your brand photos can make a big difference. One great place to start is by considering a color analysis to find out which colors look best with your skin tone, hair color, and overall look. Knowing your “season” can help you choose shades that naturally complement you. Working with a color consultant or doing a little research on seasonal color palettes can give you some fresh ideas that suit you.

But don’t just focus on what looks good on you personally—keep your brand palette in mind too. Your brand photos should align with your business identity, so incorporating your brand colors is key. At least some of your outfits should feature your brand colors or neutral tones that complement them. Even if your brand colors are bold, there are ways to include them tastefully, like through accessories or layered pieces.

Avoid bright neon colors since they tend to photograph poorly and can even cast strange hues onto your skin. For more tips on what not to wear, check out my separate blog post on dos and don’ts for brand photos.

Patterns, Graphics, and Logos:

Be strategic when incorporating patterns, graphics, and logos into your outfits. If your business name or logo is part of your branding, you can include it on your clothing, but avoid wearing other brands’ logos. Solid or neutral colors usually work best, while some subtle patterns can add interest without overwhelming the shot.

If your brand is bold, funky, or fashion-forward—like if you own a boutique or work in fashion—leaning into patterns or statement pieces might be a good fit. Just make sure it still aligns with your overall vibe. Consider how the patterns look on camera, especially when moving or posing, as some prints can create visual distortions or distractions.

Brand Alignment:

Your brand photos should represent you and how you’d normally dress when interacting with clients. Think about your profession—if you own a gym or work as a personal trainer, it makes sense to include gym attire. On the other hand, if you’re a yoga instructor, a blazer wouldn’t be fitting while demonstrating poses. Dressing authentically helps build trust and shows potential clients a realistic version of who you are.

Outfit Variety & LOCATIONS:

Most of my full sessions involve clients wearing between two and five outfits. Having a variety of looks allows you to showcase different sides of your personality and brand. Think about what the session will involve: Are we doing headshots? Will you be working with clients? Are we shooting in a studio, outside, or in a casual setting like a cafe? Each outfit should match the context and setting of the shoot.

Accessories and Seasons:

Be thoughtful about accessories—they can add a great touch, but too much can be distracting. A statement piece can work well, but layering and adding texture through scarves, cardigans, or jewelry can make your outfit more dynamic. Think about accessories as part of your overall styling rather than afterthoughts.

Also, consider the season but avoid overly seasonal looks if you want your photos to be versatile year-round. You should also think about what makes you feel comfortable and confident—knowing your body shape can help you select pieces that flatter you and make you feel great. Don’t forget that feeling good in what you wear will naturally make you look more relaxed and confident on camera.

Additional Tips:

  • Test your outfits by taking a few photos beforehand to see how they look on camera

  • Choose outfits that allow comfortable movement, especially if you’ll be posing or demonstrating activities

  • Avoid overly trendy pieces to keep your photos looking timeless

  • Coordinate your hair and makeup with your outfit colors for a cohesive look

  • Invest in well-fitted, high-quality pieces to maintain a polished appearance

Your brand photos should feel natural and reflect who you are. Choosing the right outfit makes a big difference, and it’s all about feeling confident and comfortable. Need help planning your look?
